Welcome back to another Fall of Magic Author Spotlight!
If you’re like me, you probably read a lot of books without knowing much about the people who wrote them. Working with the fifteen authors to put together the Fall of Magic anthology seemed like a great opportunity to shine the spotlight on some of my fellow authors.
Jessica Hawke, middle school teacher by day and author of the Phantoms series, and A Touch of Shadow which is available in Fall of Magic, by night.
“After a brilliant stint as a story-writer in third grade, she mostly kept to writing papers for school until she headed off to college. From eighteen onward, she spent too much time thinking about the book she might eventually write instead of just writing it. At twenty-six, she finally realized the book would not write itself and got down to the surprisingly difficult yet rewarding work of writing a novel.”
Jessica finished her first novel in 2006, and although it needed a lot work, she said, “…it proved that I could finish a long work.” After getting over that first bump in the road and proving her writing chops, she wrote her second novel and then began researching publishing options, which “eventually led to signing a contract for my first published novel in 2012.”

Most of Jessica’s work is in urban fantasy or paranormal, such as Phantom Touched. She is “obsessed with the premise of secret worlds and grand masquerades just under our noses, hidden only by a pact of secrecy and a liberal dose of magic.” Much like the hidden world of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, of which The Prisoner of Azkaban is one of Hawke’s favorite book-to-film adaptations. I have to give a high-five for that! The Harry Potter series is one of the best film adaptations to date.
“In tales of urban fantasy, things are not what they seem, and that we could be one good day (or very bad day) away from having our whole worldview changed. Surprise, magic is real, and by the way, your neighbor is a dragon.
Urban fantasy is also fun because it’s so rich with potential. People have done brilliant twists on once-familiar monsters, yanked ancient mythology into modern days, and invented magic all their own. I love the creativity of it! Plus, a lot of urban fantasy features seriously kick-ass heroines in the lead roles, and I’ll never complain about that!”

“High school’s hard enough for most kids, but it’s a real nightmare when you throw unhappy ghosts, unfinished business, and an unsolved murder into the mix.
Well, welcome to my life.”
Does this sound like an interesting series? You can download PHANTOM LIGHT, the chilling and gripping prequel to Hawke’s Phantoms series.
